AN EFFICIENT FORCE.
The promptness with which the members of the Masterton Fire Brigade answered the warning bell early yesterday morning averted what would otherwise have proved a serious fire. Some years ago a fire in the block where the outbreak of yesterday occurred, resulted in considerable damage, and serious loss to several business people. The value of an efficient fire brigade can hardly be over estimated. The possibility of fire is a very real and constant danger—conflagrations occur very easily, and in most unsuspected ways —and therefore the community should be grateful to those who give liberally of their tima and undergo inconvenience, and, on occasions, danger, in order to render themselves thoroughly efficient to protect the lives and property of their fellow citizens. The Masterton Fire Police are, also, a most useful body of men, and their work is deserving ■of hearty commendation. The townspeople are certainly tb be congratulated upon the fire fighters which they possess in their Brigade and Police.
