THE WHITE SCOURGE.

The question of the actual cost of tuberculosis to the community was raised by the Melbourne "Argus" the other day. On being asked if he .could give an estimate, the chairman of the Board of Public Health (Dr. Norn's) said:—On the basis of the usual computations, it may be .said that Victoria loses annually, as the result of deaths from tuberculosis, an equivalent of nearly £500,000 a year, in vital wealth. In the metropolis alone the amount can be set down at a quarter of a million. It is, however, gratifying to be able to state that the disease is decreasing throughout Victoria. Ten years ago the death rate for the State per 10,000 of the population was 13 per annum; now it is only 9.5. In the metropolis the reduction is' more pronounced, the death rate having fallen from 17 to 11.6 per 10,000 people.
