SEQUEL TO A BUSH FIRE.

A FUTILE CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. BY TSLEGBAPH —PKESS ASSOCIATION. CARTERTON, October 23. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., to hear a case arising out of the recent bush fires during the drought. A. C. Gallon claimed, from W. C. Ordish £291 damages, alleged to have been caused by a fire lighted by defendant on February 6th, which\ broke out afresh on March Ist, when it swept plaintiff's property. The claim was afterwards reduced to £9l. His Worship held that plaintiff had to prove that the fire lighted by Ordish on February 6th was responsible for the damage done by fire on March Ist. The defence had conclusively proved that the fire causing the damage came from the back of the hills, and not from Ordish's property. Plaintiff was non-suited, with costs £2O 3s.
