HOW THE MONEY GOES.

An instance of the manner in which the Government vote away the peoples' money regardless of the real necessities of the country, and of the very patent need that exists for the strictest economy, is the £7,000 subsidy on the Supplementary Estimates, for a mail service between Wellington and Raratonga, Papeete, and Tahiti. Auckland merchants have by enterprise, hard work, and running risks, built up a considerable trade with the Cook Islands, and yet oiir "progressive" Government can give them no better assistance than that of .subsidising a mail service (practically Wellington merchants) to compete with the Northern trade. The Auckland "Island" merchants are not in the least alarmed, and an authority upon the trade in that city states that "the Wellington service is not likely to prove a success from a financial or any other point of view." There appears to be every prospect of the ,£7,000 subsidy being absolutely wasted.
