NOTES ON THE RACES.
(By "Zetland." Waimaria and Tauira were withdrawn from the Hack Hurdles, and Master Douglas was made a firm favourite. Liberator, who is now somewhat of a veteran, was in front practically from the start, and won easily from Master Douglas. The latter badly screwed at the jumps, and certainly did not show his usual dash between the obstacles. For the Rimutaka Hack, of six furlongs, Whetumaramara, Herew&rd/; Thaler, Ta Kahuraugi and Sir, Single, were scratched. As ex-
pected, California was made a strong favourite, Sir Frisco being next in order of backing, while Swimming Belt waa the absolute outsider of the lot. From an even start, Glenullin, Gold Beater and Gold Crest formed the leading division for halfway, with Sir Frisco and Sandstream running next. California was, aa usual, slow to move, and when endeavouring to get through the field at the seven furlong post was chopped out. He then ran on the outside of the field, and although he made a gallant run when the straight was reached, failed to reach the leaders. Half way down Swimming Belt was in front, and stalling off determined challenges by Zimmerman and Sir Frisco, won by a length. The winner was capably ridden by G. Price, and was the biggest outsider that has yet won at Trentham. Gipsy Belle, the favourite, was first away in the Shorts Handicap, and to the turn was accompanied by North Head. Three chains from the post Truganini put in a brilliant run, but was beaten by Gipsy Belle by a short head. Sunbonnet, ridden by C. Jenkins, finished last.
Ten exceptionally highly bred tvo-year-olds lined out for the Wellesley Stakes, of five furlongs. From a very even despatch, Provocation and Elysian were first out, and when the straight was reached they were well clear of the field. The pair fought the issue out, Provocation winning by half a length in the fast time of forty nine and a fifth seconds. Tawhaki finished third about ten le-gths from the leader. Diabolo was looked upon as a good thing for the Wainui Handicap, in which eight started. San Fernando was first away and led to the home turn, where he was joined by Vasa, by three quarters of a length. Diabolo was fourth, and Moloch, who appeared short of a gallop, finished fifth.
