A REPLY TO "A.H."

(To the Editor.) i Sir, In reply to a 1 letter 1 signed "A. 1T.," in Saturday's—October 17th —issue of your paper, our friend must have been suffering with a sore head or something of the kind. He asserts there are six fine hotels in Queen Street, all of which will be turned into dismal boarding houses if No-Licehse it. carried. Jn the first instance, this poor unfortunate seems to think that the beer is the only means of making the hotels respectable. Well, one only needs ,to pass along the streets of a Saturday night and you will see groups of men and boys half drunk hanging round the public house doors, and this is what the open bars are doing, and our friend "A.11." seems to think this is respectability. Of course, our friend is right. In another instance, our friend "Swollen head," states that the Borough Council will loose over £3CO in' license fees. "A.H." states there are six hotels in Masterton. Quite true, and each paying £4O for a license. That, of course, makes £3OO. i'oor "A.H."must have got brain fever alter making that wonderful calculation. Again, "A.H's." mental capacity has been taxed. Poor soul, he has got four houses, two of which are empty, and our friend expects to lose another tenant, which will make a third house empty, but when No-License is carried theie will be only one empty. I cannot quite grasp his reasoning but our friend must be right. Altogether "A.H." has made a very good job o< ! the letter, but I don't think it will be the means of winning the poll, so I think "A.H." had better strike out the top line if those houses are to be tenanted, —I am, etc H FAIR PLAY.
