THE WESTPORT TRAGEDY.
QUESTION OF COMPENSATION. By Telegraph--Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 19. ' With reference to the tragedy at commonly known as the Westport murder case, and the sensational sequel the confession of Connolly, in which he admitted having killed Burke in a fit of temper —and the release of Hallinen and Andersen, who had been convicted and sentenced for the crime, it is understood that the Government has been requested to consider the case with the view of granting compensation to the two men who were wrongly convicted. It will be remembered that the unfortunate man Andersen died a few days, ago from epileptic fits, and it was is alleged that his death was partly due to the worry and mental pain caused by his wrongful conviction. The whole case is now being considered by the Government. There is much speculation in legal circles as to what the attitude of the Government will be in the matter of giving compensation to Hallinen and to the nearest relatives of Andersen.
