Mr William Harrington, of Sumner, a very old settler in the Canterbury province, died on Thursday evening. 'lhe deceased claimed to be one of the first four persons to reside in Lyttelton. Mr C. C. Graham, who was in active service as stipendiary magistrate in Dunedin until ru'ently, has been appointed to act as magis-ttate at YVanganui for a month or two. At Mauriceville, last Wednesday, Mr F. Blatchford, of Rangitnmau, was married to Miss Lily Mallabar, of Mauriceville. Mr F. Hunter, of the Eketahuna Post Office staff, has been transferred to Oamaru, and ban been succeeded by Mr Grenfell, of Tokoinaru Bay. The death is announced at Palmerston North of Mr James Board, manager of Mr W. G. C. Smith's fiaxmill at Oroua Bridge. He' wa3 an old resident of the district. A pleasant ceremony took place at the Carterton ,railway station on Friday evening last, when Mr Coe, who is leaving the railway service to take up farming in the Manawatu, was made a presentation as a imivk of esteem. The presentation was made by the stationmaster (Mr Milltr). The death occurred at Paln-.erston North, on Saturday last, of Mm-. J'ames Hanly, one of New Zealand's ; pioneer settlers. Tlie decease'! laJy j was 72 years of age. She came to New Zeaiand from Ireland in the early fifties, and settled in Auckland with her husband, who was a wellknown cordial manufacturer for many years in the northern city. She subsequently removed to Paimerston North. Mr W. M. Jacks, who ha.-i represented Messrs Abbott, Oram and Co. in Hawke's Bay for many years, was entertained on Friday evening by ! about thirty gentlemen connected with various business interests in | Napier. Mr Jacks was presented J with a silver-mounted oak liqueur ! stand. Mr Jacks has been promoted to the managership of his firm's Christchurch branch, and will leave for the South towards the end of the pVS-_-;,C nx'i'ltil. j
