Mr David Edward Jones, of Otaki, an old settler, died on Saturday last. He had sueffred from severe illness for some years past, and his end was .not unexpected. The deceased was 60 years of age. Mr A. D. McLeod, of Pahaoa, and Mr H. Ranish, of Maryborough, returned on Wednesday from a trip to England and America. Mr and Mrs Sutherland, of Pahaoa, are expected to arrive in Wellington about the middle of next month. At Palmerston North onjWednesday Mr Wiliam Ward, fourth son of Mr G. Ward, of Palmerston jNorth, was married to Miss Lilian Beattie, eldest daughter of the late Mrs Beattie, of Palmerston North. Three sisters of the bride were bridesmaids, while Mr J. H. Ward, brother of ;the bridegrom, acted as best man, and Mr E. Ward as groomsman. Mr Wm. Valentine Robinson, C M.G., who long held conspicuous places on the staff of the Victorian Parliament, died last week in his 72nd year. Born in Yorkshire in 1873, Mr Robinson went to Victoria in October, 1861, as a young journalist, under an engagement to the proprietors of the "Argus." Six years later Mr T. C. Hadly, Mr Howard Willoughby, and himself, then all members of the "Argus" staff, founded the Victorian "Hansard," under contract with " the Government. In 1899 Mr Robinson gave up the "Hansard" to become a clerk of the Legislative Assembly; and when Sir Geo. H. Jenkins was »promoted to be clerk of the L Jislative Council and Clerk of Parliaments, Mr Robinson succeeded to the Assembly clerkship, which position he heldjuntil 1902, when he reached 'the retiring age. Mr Robinson is survived by his widow and a family of grown-up sons and daughters.
