NECESSITY FOR A LEAGUE.
The people of Masterton have always shown themselves decidedly apathetic over the question of close settlement of.the land in their district, and especially so in comparison with various centres in the Dominion which could be mentioned. The present slackness of trade and scarcity of money, are, it would .appear, however, exercising a desirable influence upon the public mind, by bringing home the fact that unless the people of Masterton make an effort to help any further progress of 'the town, for many years to come, is a matter of uncertainty. Two very important questions have been brought forward in different ways before the public, viz., the need of close settlement, and the construction of a branch line of railway from Masterton to Waipukurau. It|surely cannot be necessary to impress upon any intelligent resident, of Masterton how great would be the advantages arising from such projects, if only they were carried out. Strong and persistent prqbably result in both aims being ackieved, and it seems to us that the time is ripe, and more than' ripe, for the formation of a representative land and railway league, comprising all progressive-minded townsmen and settlers. We sincerely hope that such a league as we have mentioned will be formed. It is . beyond question that it could do work of a very valuable character In the interests of Masterton and the whole district, if it were to work i?pon a well-deter mined plan and in an energetic manner.
