BOROUGH FINANCE COMMITTEE.
At a meeting of the Works and Finance Committee of the Council on October 6th, there were present— The Mayor, Mr P. L. Holllings (in the chair), Crs Elliott, Ewington, Haughey, Hunter, Morris,' 1 ; Pauling Pragnell, and Prentice. ' The Acting Borough Engineer reported inter alia:—The work of regulating and metalling Lincoln road is proceeding, with it simultaneously the formation of Bentley and Villa streets. lam proceeding with kerbing, channelling and path formation of Villa street north and south and with tar-paving of a portion of Lincoln road.
A report of the Acting Borough Engineer upon the £25,000 Improvement Loan was submitted and received. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved: —That the report be referred back to the Engineer to make a re-adjustment if possible so that provision may be made for sufficient funds to complete the following works, which are considered urgent:—l, Lincoln road; 2, Pine street; 3, Kuripuni street, construction of widening road, footpaths, removal of buildings, fencing and all compensation; Queen street, tar macadam from Waipoua to Renall street only; 5, Cockburn street; 6, Makora street and bridge; 7, Pownall street; 8, Villa street; 9, Bentr lpy street; 10, Fire alarms; 11', Cross street; 12, Ngamatawa road. For report to next Works Committee meeting. The Carterton Bacon Curing Company attended the meeting to urge additional accommodation and reduction in price for pig killing and dressing, guaranteeing a minimum killing of 2,000 pigs per annum. The manager reported verbally in favour of the concession, suggesting that the price be reduced in this instance from 2s Gd to Is 9d per carcase. The Committee appointed Crs Ewington, Morris and Pauling to confer with the Company and report. The manager's monthly report was submitted and received. At the request of the manager he was authorised to purchase 100 malleable pulleys at a cost not exceeding £8 6s 6d, f.0.b., Lyttelton. An application was received from ' the Education Board for a continuance of the meter supply of water to the Lansdowne Public j School originally given to the contractors. Subject to the execution of a form of agreement to the satisfaction of the Town Clerk the Committee recommend that the supply be given. The Committee considered the applies tion of the Mount Holdsworth Committee for monetary assistance, but were unable to grant the request.
