LAND TRANSACTIONS.
The annual report of the Lands Transfer and Deeds .Registration Department is always an interesting document for those who care to analyse the figures contained therein. The tabulated figures, like must of the other departmental returns, give the most meagre details, sufficiently only to comply with the requirements of law However, we have made it our business to extract all the information possible, and by comparison with previous years, there is considerable value in the returns. The B number of transfers registered during the year ended March 31st, 1908, was 21,791, and this compares with previous years as under: — March 31. It will thus be seen that in the past financial year there had been considerable activity in real estate. The total areas involved in these transactions compare as under :
Of the 6,678 acres of town and suburban property, Wellington District accounts for 2,308f acres, Auckland District for 1,140| acres, Canterbury accounts for 870 acres, and Otago for S37J acres. The country or farming lands are the more interesting, and the areas transferred in the past' year compared with those for the previous year in each of the following districts compare as under:—
