OPENING OF A MINE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. WESTPORT, October fi. The official opening of the West-port-Stockton Coal Company's mine l took place at Ngakawau to-day. A large number of people travelled there by speci.l train Speeches wore made by Messrs Reece (Chairnun of Directors) and Greenwood (Mayor of Westport), who also turned the handle of the engine at the power house, and set the whole of the machinery in motion. Everything worked smoothly. The visitors were afterwards entertained at a banquet, when speeches were made eulogistic of Mr F. F. Munro, promotor ot the Company, and Mr G. H. Broome, the Company's managing engineer, who said there was coal practically in sight for sixty years' output, with probably more to be located as the works developed. The plant is unique in New Zealand coal mining in that it is electrically driven from the mine to the bins. The Company already has as many orders in hand as it can immediately cope with.
