Large Melbournes are retailing at 14s 6d to 35s 6d; Sydney, 16s to 16s 6d; young, 14s 6d to 15s. Hares—Market firm at 30s per -dozen, ex store. The Frozen Meat Trade Association's Smithfield market quotations .'for the undermentioned classes of frozen meats are based on actual tsales of not less than 100 carcases ■ of mutton or lamb, or 25 carcases ot beef, of fair average quality. These quotations are not for selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of the shipments now on the market — New Zealand sheep —Crossbred wethers and medium ewes: North .Island. 551b to 651b, 3|d; others "unchanged. New Zealand lambs— Canterbury ■light, 281b to 361b, s|d; medium, 5 5-16 d; heavy, 861b to 421b, 4§d; O-hers and beef unchanged. River Plate sheep—Unchanged. River Plate beef—Ox fores, unchanged; hinds, 1801b to 2201b, 4d.
' . HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, date'd London, October, 3rd 1908:The mutton market is dull. Trade for all classes has been very slow, and prices sre barely maintained. The following are the current quotations:—Light weights: Canterbury, North Island 3§d; per lh. Heavy weights: Canterbury, 3£; North Island, 3gd per lb. There has been a better tone in the lamb mancet this week. Stocks on .faand are light, and the market may advance further if demand does not • abate. Canterbury lamb is quoted at sfd, and other than Canterbury , at s&d per lb. Tiie beef market is quiet, and is likely to go lower. Supplies of American chilled beef are large. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3gd, and forequarters at 3sd per lb. > The butter market is firm, but demand is only moderate. Second grade is plentiful, but the demand is chiefly fox best, quality. Danish butter is mioted at 1245; Siberian, 109s; and -Argentine llfis tier cwt. The cheese market is dull, but prices are iirm and there is no change to report. The hemp market closes weak, with lower tendency in prices. The following-are the current quotations: —Good fair grade on spot, £27; fair grade on spot, £23; fair current Manila on spot, £23 10s; October to December shipments, 'good fair t grade, £25 15s: fair grade, £23; fair current Manila £23 10s. Last 'Wsek's output from Manila amounted 12,000 bales., The cocksfoot ;seed market is dull, and poor business has been done. Bright clean 171b seed is quoted at 85s per cwt, nominal. The wool market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. The kauri gum market is steady, with a very good demand. Current •quotations are as follows: —Ordinary to |air threequarter scraped, 1655; fair half scraped, 100s; brown, fair, , half to threequarter scraped, 90s; I brown pickings, common to good, 455; bush, fair to good, pale and • amber scraped, 120s.
