A COMMENDABLE APPOINTMENT.
The Masterton Borough Council undoubtedly adopted a course last evening in regard to the retiring Town Clerk (Mr R. Brown) which few, if any, ratepayers will complain of. They created a permanent office of
Borough valuer, and made a separate position of the returning officer's duties, and by combining the two made a happy combination peculiarly suited to Mr Brown's experienced ability. No one will deny that Mr Brown's long and faithful services -entitle him to any permanent recognition which might be forthcoming under any proposed legislation, aiming at the superannuation on pension of municipal servants over a certain age. But even apart from this the Council has proffered an appointment to Mi Brown, which will be no sinecure to the retiring Town Clerk if he accepts it. A large sum has been paid away by the Council in the past in valuer's fees, and in view of the valuations yet to be made in connection with the extension and widening of various streets, and particularly Makora and Kurpiuni streets, a permanent valuer will find plenty to do. Elections and polls are also matters demanding expert attention, and this Mr Brown can bestow upon them.. The new office should not in any way interfere with the ordinary office routine of the Council, as was tentatively suggested by one Councillor, and will no cbubt prove a successful financial proposition for the ratepayers.
