TUiiP NOTES.
(By "Zetlai-tL")
By his forward running at the Wanganui meeting, Frisco maintains the position of one of the first favourites for the New Zealand Cup. His running .in the Marangai Handicap, one ; mil<', was full of merit, as he was giving the brilliant Taitoko sixteen pounds in weight, and only ■ lost the verdict by a nose. Those who attended the Wanganui meeting are loud in their praises of Crucinella, the half-sister to those goo.l performers Nonette and Bonh< ur. Ihe mare will soon be out of the hack class, but on her breeding should be successful in open com-
pany. Cjusidt-ral'ltJ interest will be manifested next week in the running of California, who has heen allotted 9st 61b in the principal event at the Hawke's Bay meeting. He is con- ' sidare I a thorough stayer, and in November next will meet some of the best horses in New Zealand in the Canterbury. Cup and other events at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Recent additions to the track workers at Opaki are Thera, Culver Lass, and Steel Gun.. The latter is being trained by A. Watson, who also has Traylock in work. Mr A. Reside's Sou'wester gelding, Lebeccio, is being schooled over hurdles. Some interesting work was witnessed at the Opaki course yesterday morning on the plough, which is on the heavy side, although improving every day. Sealer, Aberration, Merrie England filly, Merrie Rose, Lucretius, Bonnie Scotland filly, Thera, Culver Lass and the Waiuku colt were given good working exercise. San Julie and Moloch were associated in a gallop of one mile. In a fine finish the pair finished together. Sunbonnet and Scotch Reel ran six furlongs, the first named showing to best advantage, and finishing a couple of lengths to the good. A mile go was allotted to Gaelic and Riflemaid. The Bonnie Scotland gelding put in a very resolute finish, and passed the post with a margin of about half a length. Kiltie Lass, Mtrriwee filly, and the St.'Paul colt spurted two furlongs along the buck. Blue Ribbon sprinted over half a mile in good style, and Osiris, with a light weight up, was batter than Skye over five furlongs. , A much fancied New Zealand Cup candidate, Ringdove, is reported to have run very green at the Ashburton meeting, and although looked upon as a stayer, may not be ready on Cup day to run ojt a solid two miles' contest. The Wairarapa-owned New Zealand Cup entrants—Moloch and Riflemaid—are doing satisfactory track work at Opaki, and by November 7th they should be in splendid racing condition. They will be raced at the Wellington meeting, and then taken down to Riccarton, arriving there a fortnight before the decision of the big event. A good nomination list for the Masterton meeting is confidently expected next week. The majority of the district trained horses wilt be nominated, and there should also be a satisfactory response on the part of outside owners.
