TIRED OF BEING FRENCH.

New Caledonia, according to the "Petit Journal," of Paris has shacked the French Colonial Office consid erably by sending in a petition, signel by the leadi.ig inhabitants, requesting blandly, that "Negotiations be onened with the British Government with a view to handing New Caledonia to Great Britain, and to incorporating; .the colony in the Commonwealth of Australia." The colonists, it seems, are tired of being French. They accuse the French Administration of doing nothing wnatever to assist them in developing the great natural resources of the island. The soil is fertile, and abounds in mineral ore, and the climate is pleasant and healthy. Yet the contrast between the state of stagnation in which the colony lies is painful, say the inhabitants, compared with the prosperity of Australia and New Zealand. Consequently they would rather become Australians and obtain self-government. Failing that, transportation of criminals to New Caledonia should first of all be stopped, and then the spirit at all events of liritish colonising methods should be applied to the development of the island.
