THE RAILWAY WORKSHOPS RUMOUR
DISCUSSED BY THE CHAMBER! ' OF COMMERCE. \ ' MASTERTON'S INTERESTS IB®; BE WATCHEO. ; The question ay to whether thems ifl | any foundation in the report cur-peratl • in Master ton a few days ago, ae-i garding the proposed removaJ feyj ;the Government of the Petone rail-j way workshops to Masterton was ( brought up at the annual meeting;; of the Chamber of Commerce yes.tev-| day by Mr J. C. Ewington. j Mr Ewington tairl that he thought; ithere was more than mere rumour at- j riached to the reoort, which was , given prominence in the columns of | the Wairarapa Age. There had been ! .considerable talk at various times in j the past of the Government removing i the workshops from Petone. It was becoming yearly more apparent that the Hatter place had become unsuitable ior the purposes of railway repsiir -works, as most of the damaged and worn rolling stock had to be tafcer.iover the Rimutaka to be repaired. There had been various suggestions imade that the Petone shops qhoaid ibe removed to Palmerston North, Woodville, Greytown, and other places, and the least the Masterton 'Chamber of Commerce might do in the matter was to set up a committee to watch the interests of Masterton. There was no doubt but that on the 'Upper Plain suitable land at r2Bson«!b!le.Eo9t could be purchased and it must be rem unbered ;that the Government would not .be dslkely to proclaim its ji&Ucy regarding the workshops from the house-tope. It would mean a ga>aatthincr for Masteri ton if the workshops were estabJ'khed | here, and he repealed his belief that ! (there was «?aae justification for the ' .report. Mr Ewington than moved that a\committee be set up to "'ateh sbe interests of Masterton in the j matter. ' Mr E. H. Wsddingtoa seconded the motion Various speakers expressed the opioson that there would be no harm done if a committee were set up, and that if the workshops were,; to be removed from Petone, Mast&rton's interests could be advanced as far as lay in tfae committee's power. Mr J. D. Cruickshank said he would support a motion that the matter be recommended to the coni sideration of the incoming executive. Mr Ewington said that would suit ' him, and the motion was altered to 1 Jfc'iat effect and carried unanimously.
