MASTERTON'S FIRST RIFLE MEETING.
Again the town passes a mile post of progress. A rifle meeting of considerable importance, and with great prospects before it, was held on Fairview R-nge yesterday, under the auspices of the newly-formed North Wai rarapa Handicap Rifle Association. This class of meeting has a special value in the rifle-shooting world, because it gives young shots better encouragement to persevere than does the open meeting, where the rule is that old and tried shots scoop the pool. To Messrs N. F. and N. L. Willoughby, of Gladstone, two very enthusiastic and energetic is due the honor of having first suggested the formation of the new Association, while to the ever urogressi/e and in lefatigable Opaki Kifle Club every credit mujt be given for having assisted the Messrs Willoughby to crystallize their idea. The result of yesterday's gathering on Fairview Range givis a rough idea of liow very strong a hold rifle-shoot-ing has in and aroun 1 this district, and there is little question but that there will be yet more important rifle meetings held here in the course of a short time.
