ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.

THE NEW CHURCH. A meeting of psrishit.ners was held last night in St. Ma.t lew's Schoolroom, to fill the vacar.c es .on the Vestry, and also to onsicer what steps should be taken with regard to the nfw church. In spite of the bad weather, the attendance was good and the meeting enthusiastic. ' Messrs J. W. Blackman, T. Per main, and W. H. Galwey were elected to fill the vacancies on the Vestry. . The Vicar (Rev. H. Watson) then explained the portion with regard to the new church. He said that it was estimated that the total cost would be about £7,000, and the Diocesan Trustees had agreed to pledge the rents of the Church acre for twenty years if £5,000 could be arranged "for, provided that £2,000 was raised independently. Mr- W. H. Jackson moved, and Mr C. A. Tabuteau seconded, "that steps be at once taken to obtain promises towards the £2,000 required, such promises to be a lump sum, or a sum to be extended over a period not exceeding five years." Thi3 was unanimously carried. A canvassing ommittee was then appointed, consisting of the Vestry, together with Messrs M. R. Varnham, E. Winzenberg, C. G. Monro, H. S. Claughton, with the secretary, Mr W. B. Chennells, with power to add to their number. A sub-committee was appointed to consider details and report in a fortnight's time.
