SERIOUS FIRE AT ASHBURTON.
VALUABLE RACEHORSES DESTROYED. BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ASHIiURTON, September 22. At 7.45 this morning, a fire totally destroyed Zetland Lodge, owned by J. C. N. Grigg. as a racing stable, and managed by C. Giesler. Besides the buildings, gear and feed, three valuable racehorses—Step Up, valued at £500; Restless, valued at £350; and Interpreter, valued at £loo—were burnt to death. The men's detached sleeping apartment was destroyed, though the contents were saved. The origin of the fire is unknown, but when it was discovered the flames had a strong hold on the building, which is situated near the racecourse, and only seven out of ten horses were with much difficulty rescued. % Both Restless and Step Up were promising equities, and, had been Successful at the recent Ashburton races. There was an insurance of £4OO on the stables, and £2O on the men's room in the Liverpool, London and Globe, but no policy covered the horses, and Mr Grigg will surfer an actual loss of about £1,300 over and above the insurance.
