IUUF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.") The glori us uncertainty of the turf was anain exemplified in the case of the brilliant Nauinai at Avondale on Saturday la t The speedy Conqueror gelding was supposedly thrown in the Henri"rso" Handicap, of half a mile, with 9at 310. He was heavily baektd in Wellington and Wairarapa, and to the surprise uf punters generally, ran a poor mail in Foremost and Taimanupo in 50 2 ssec. At Levin he won in similar A .i>e, when carrying lOst 91b, and it was expected that he would at 1 a*t have run the distance in 49sei.s with twenty pounds weight otf his back. Maybe the journey up and the course being a right-handed one prevented Naumai showing his best form The Wairarupa horses engaged at the uellinf ton meeting next month are San June, Silken Rem, Blue Ribbon, I unbonnet, Moloch, Merrie Zealand, and Kiltie Lass. Quite a numne- rf district-trained horses will make their first appearance this season at thi Musterton meeting at the end of October. The well-known Canterbury owner, Mr J. C. N. Grigg, scored live firsts and two se o ids with his racing team at the Ashj.a-ton meeting. A good record so early in the season for one staule. Dusky Morn, who competed in the last Newmarket in Australia, is in work again at Wanganui, and is said 10 be galloping freely. Mr A.. Banks, whose death at Paimemcn Noith is reported, was a good suppot ter of racing. He owned the hurdle horses Hatley and Oakley. Th-5 Marton Racing Club made a profit of £974 over its recent ingine totalisator at the next Lower Vulley Jockey Club meeting will be worked by Marrett and Fox, of Napier. For the Avondale meeting, which will be continued to-day, Naumai's weight in the Mount Albert Handicap, 'if rive furlongs, in 9st 101b. In the Plumpton Handicap, one mile, Leonator has Dst 41b and Wailethe 9st lib. The latter ran very poorly in the Cup on Saturday, and could have been let j off with less weight. Mr J. Cress has named his Kilcheran—Eketerii.i Passaropoulo filly, Kiltie Lass. She is engaged in the Wellesley Stakes to be run at Trentham next month. Merrivonia, by Merriwee—Livonia, trained by J. Ayers, at Tauherenikau, will compete in hack events at the Welliugtan meeting. The New Zealand Cup candidates that may be seen out at Wanganui thia week are The Lark, Mahuta, Uhlando, Seaman, Glenullin, Uenuku and Mallet. The present favourites for the New Zealand Cup are Frisco, Master Delaval, Mahuta, Ringdove, Signor and Stratagem. The Lower Valley Jockey Club has decided not to place a Hunters' Race on its programme this year. J. Phillips has recently put into work at Opaki a bay gelding by Bonnie Scotland. He is well-grown, and shows plenty of strength. The nominations for the Stewards' Handicap, to be run at Riccarton on New Zealand Cup day, include the best sprinters of the country. Many sportsmen are already endeavouring to select the most likely candidates, but the task is acknowledged to be a most difficult one. Among the best , performed entrants are Gold Crest, ! Gold Thread, Dusky Morn, Penates, Armlet, Lord Soult, Bobrikoff, Gipsy Belle, Gold Beater, Dawn, Lupulite, Muskerry, Sunbonnet, Simplex, Petrovna, Count Witte, Sea King, Oxton, North Head, Glenculloch and Full Rate. In the event of this lot starting, the race would be a brilliant exhibition of galloping. Sportsmen throughout the Dominion will express sympathy With Mr J. C. N. Grigg relative to the loss of Step-up, Restless and Interpreter, which were burned to death yesterday.
