EXCESSIVE PUNISHMENT.
SCHOOLBOY CANED FOR BEING LATE. B A SCHOOLMASTER FINED. BY TELMJRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, September 21. At the Onehunga Court to-day, Mr Northcroft, S.M., gave judgment in the case in which M'lntosh, headmaster of the public school, was charged with assaulting a pupil by caning him. The magistrate said it was, in his opinion that punishment was excessive, and not for sufficient cause. Defendant erred in not asking the boy why he was late before punishing him for that offence. Defendant announced that he wished to appeal, and was fined £G, and costs «£4 7s.
