THE DAIRY REGULATIONS.
The proposed Dairy Regulations have assuredly brought a hornet's nest about the unfortunate Government's ears. There is oneiunanimous outcry on the part of farming organisations throughout the country, and resolutions are being passed whol. j s;ih/. No of scorn is levelled at some of the proposed regulation on the ground of their ridiculous nature. A sample from the "Otaki v Mail," which circulates in a big dairy district, criticises as follows regulation 30, which runs:—" 'No daily - man shall permit any cow, calf, or other animal to be at large within thirty feet of any cowihej, milk' house, or other building used in connection with the handling or storing of milk, or allow any pig to tome within fifty yards of any such cowshed, milk-house, or other building a3 aforesaid." Did anyone ever hear of a more ridiculous and sweeping ragulation. Under this provision, a farmer who had to drive some pig 3 to market, and allowed one to come within a couple of chains of the milking-shed woul.l be liable to a penalty, or even if the dog in its peregrinations happaned to get within thirty feet of the building that would be an offence. If this regulation becomes Jaw, farmei'3 will have to erect a galvanised iron fence some ten feet in height all round the cowshed, never allow the dog off the chain, and even securely chain jip 'pussy'—for tha housahqlJ cat is surely an 'animal' and crimes within the law —for fear of a breach. In fact, the cowshed will become altogether 'tapu.' "
