WORK IN MINES.
The Goldfields Committee of the | House of Representatives has considered Mr Guinness' Hours ot Underground Workers Bill, and recommends that it be not proceeded wich. The Bill provides for an eight-hours' day, with jhalf-an-hour 1 out of each eight hours for meal ' time. The Committee haa 'tnade several amendments in Mr 1 M'Gowdn's Bill to amend the' Coal ' Mines Act: One of these is with a view to giving every miner nt least thirty minutes out of every working of eight hours for cribtime. Another prqvision is that no ' person shall be appointed to the position of'underviewer or foreman and deputy unless he has had five " years' experience in undeiground workings in a coal mine, and, has 3 passed an examination by or.e or more ! members of the Board, of Examiners j and an inspector of mines. Men who ' have held such positions for twelve ! months prior to the commencement " j of the Act are, however, to he grant--3 j ed certificates of service on applicaj tion.
