WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND. BT TELEGRAPH —PKKHS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, September 6. Between three hundred and four hundred people witnessed the challenge match for the New Zealand Hockey Association Championship Shield at Victoria Park, yesterday, 1 between Wellington and Auckland. The weather was gloriously fine, and the ground played like a billiard table. The game resulted in a win for the holders (Auckland) by two goals to nil. In the first spell Barry scored for Auckland as the result of soma clever combined play between himself, Brooke-Smith, Mather and Mason, whil) in the second half Brooke-Smith scored from a passing run between Barry and Mather. Auckland were the better team, a succession of hard matches in defending the Shield having put the men into splendid fettle. Their forwards showed great pace, while the backs gave a finished exhibition. Like the winners the Wellington men played a pretty game, but they were acting on the defensive for the greater part of the second spell, and would probably have had a bigger total registered against them had the shooting of t'-e opposing forwards been up to the mirk. For Wellington Smythe and Elliott among the forwards, and Campbell, Brewer and Hickton among the backs were the most prominent. Mr W. E. Robinson, of Auckland, gave satisfaction as leferee.

Kia Toa (Greytown) team, playing as Wairarapa A team were defeated by the Hawke's Bay A team by five goals to nil. The ganm was not so one sided as the score would indicate. The defeat of Kia Toa by Hawke's Bay is the first defeat the Greytown team has suffered since it was formed four years ago. Masterton team, playing as Wairarapa B team met Nelson. The strenuous game Masterton played against the crack Wellington team the previous day told on them, and although they held Nelson safe in the first spell they fell away in the second spell, and were defeated by seven goals to nil. Miss Rayner, one of the smart Masterton halves was ill, and could not play. Miss Evans, the substitute, missed the boat, and the half-line had to be filled by a Carterton player, who was a stranger to the position.
