SEVEN LIVES LOST. RESCUE OPERATIONS HOPELESS. HEARTRENDING SCENES.

Received September 7, 1.20 a.m. BRISBANE, September 6. A shocking disaster occurred at Mount Morgan Mine on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of seven men. Their names are Leishman, Shepherd, Guthrie, Jorj, Hillyard, Gerrke, and Ryan. They were employed on the 850 feet level, when suddenly, without warning, an immense mass of earth and rock , 'estimated at 3,000 tons, broke away, filling the level and burrying seven. Though it was recognised that the position was practically hopeless work, the mine wa» stopped and rescue operations started and continued throughout the night. To-day the work was attended with great danger, owing to further debris falling. The last body was recovered to-night. They were all terribly mutilated. A great crowd surrounded the mine, and there were pitiful scenes. Five of those killed were married. Just prior to the collapse a man met with an accident, and a companion accompanied him out of the tatal level Guthrie descended and took the injured man's place. The man who escorted the injured companion, on returning to work with two others, had a narrow escape. The three were standing just outside the disturbed area whpn it collapsed,
