UNDERGROUND WORKERS.
Those members who are concerned J about the men who have to work , underground are not satisfied with the prospect of getting a Bill through Parliament dealing with the subject this session. They point out that the Hon. A. R. Guinness' Bill providing for an eight hours' day "bank to bank," and half-an-hour's meal time, with overtime after eight hours, was sent to the Mines' Committee on July 29th, and whatever that Committee does with it, tne prospect of its again coming before the House are small. The Minister for Mines has brought in a Bill amending the Coal Mines Act providing for the payment of overtime after eight hours, notwithstanding any award of the Arbitration Court, but it is pointed out that it says nothing about the men who work in gold mines or tunnels, or other underground workers, and does not deal with the question of mealtime. When the Minister's Bill comes up for its second reading and Committee stages, a good deal will, it is stated, be said on the subject.
