MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

'MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Works and jFinance Committee of the Masterton Borough Council, held at the Council • Chambers, on Tuesday, August 25th, there were .present -The Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) and Crs Elliott, Ewington, Haughey, Hunter, Morris, .Pauling, Yarr. An application was received from W. S. Lett for permission to con•.sTuct a so-called septic tank on • Jean's Estate on the ground that the ■ contract had been let prior to the .passing of the resolution on the 18th iinst. The Committee in the circumstance recommend that the request be granted. The application of John Mackay for the position of custodian of the Dixon'street baths was considered, and it was resolved that he be informed that the Council intend to in» vite applications for the post when ~*%r3 application can be repeated. The Committee instructed the Acting Borough Engineer to report what further works are necessary to provide tor the prompt emptying of the baths "together with the coat thyreof. A communication was considered fcj.n the Fire Board on the question (if the pressure and the sizi of the m tins of the Borough's water supply fatid to a question of the consumption of water during times of drought. On the mo f .ion of the Mayor it was resolved that the' Fire Board be informed that the Council have already decided to improve the wacer dupply in accordance with No. 1 scheme outlined in Mr Lang-Meason's report, and that an abstract from such report relating thereto be forwarded to the Bonrd with a suggestion that thsy transmit it to Mr Hugp. A letter was received from the Fire Board accepting the puggesition of the Council to instal the electric fire alarm system under an agreement and suggesting the appointment of a joint committee to carry out the work, nominating Messrs 0. . Pragnsll, J. H. Pauling, J. C. Ewington . and W. Morris as Fire Board members. The Committee recommended tnat with the addition of Cr Hunter , tha Council be satisfied with the constitution of the Committee and thi t such Committee be given power to act. An application was received from tle Board for a continuance of ttia present arrangement for horsing a companied by an undertaking to pay such charges as the Council considers fair and reasmabh thereto-. Thtf Committee rd■. ommtnded tnat 'the request be granted, the charge therefor to te determined by the Acting-Borough Engineer. There now being an authoiity » 'established within" the Borough for lire prevention purposes the Commiltee recommended that the Fire ' Board be requested to take over Mr Brat?gins, at present receiving a salary of £ls per annum for his service as nightwatchman, and to continue him in that capacity with that salary. A communication was submitted . from the Secretary of the syndicate dealing with the Scrlway Estate requesting the Borough Council to extend their water mains along High • street to. the intersection of the.pronew streets thereabouts 20J On the motion of Cr Ewington, seconded by Cr Morris, it was resolved that the Council undertakes to continue its main to connect with th.'ir main when it is completed. The Park Committee recommended tthe carrying out of the extension of the lake by expending the balance of ..£97, and that the execution of such w n-k be left in the hands of the custo lian under the supervision of the i!Sui)-committee.
