PARADISE OF "GRAFT."
DICTATOR WHO PAID SALARIES IN ADVANCE. Extraordinary allegations are being made regarding the augmentation took place in the Civil List during the Franco Dictatorship, writes the Lisbon correspondent of tne London "Daily Mail." It is stated that in addition to the large extra sums paid io the late King, hundreds of high Government officials, generals, and Court dignitaries received large advances on t ieir salaries. For example, a certain general holding an influential position at Court is alleged to have received £IO,OOO of his salary in advance. Another army officer recently appointed to a colonial position of importance is said t> have drawn three years' salary, and then refused to take the post. There are, it is said, hundreds of sunn case 3, and the Government have promised to present a full list to Parliament naxt seision. The Minister of Finances denies that anything improper has been done. A duel took plac on tha morning of July 14th last between Senor Alto iso Costa, the leader of the Republican party in Parliament, and Count Peiiha Garcia, an ex-Minister, as the insult of some strong language used during the discussion in Parliament on the Civil List. They fought through three rounds, and Senor Casta was slightly wounded in the'arm. Although this ended i tha duel the combatants refused to be reconciled.
