ALLEGED SHEEP-STEALING.

BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 1. The Supreme Court was occupied to day, hearing a case of alleged sheep-stealing against James Robertson. Accused pleaded not guilty. The case was unfinished when the Court rose.

WELLINGTON, September I. The following is Captain Edwin's weather forecast to 3 p.m. to-mor-row :—Moderate to strong easterly winds !northward of Napier and New Plymouth, but from the northward everywhere else, with falling barometer everywhere.

Mr H. G. Groves, Bush Grove, reports ad follows:—The rainfall for the vnDnth was 2.61 inches. The maximum fall was 70 points on the sth. Rain fell on thirteen days. The maximum temperature for the month was 62 on the 17th, and the minimum temperature 26 on the Bth. The rainfall for August, 1907, was 4.02 inches. Mr A. B. Nicholls reports that the rainfall registered at Castlepoint for the month of August was 2.03 inches. Rain fell on thirteen days, the maximum being 53 points on the 4th, and the minimum 1 point on the 28th. Mr J. C. Boddington reports as folows:—Rain fell on fifteen days in August on the Upper Plain. The maximum fall in 24 hours was 46 points on the 20th, and the minimum 2 points on the 30th. The total for the month was 2.67 inches, as against 4.61, 2.05, 1.74, 2.73 inches in August 1904, 1905. 1906 and 1907 respectively. The total for eight months is 23.84 inches, as against 27.y9, 28.73, 31.13 and 41.16 for the corresponding period in 1904, 1905, 1906 and 1907. From this it will be seen that so far the rainfall thij year is 5J inches short of the average for the previous four years, including the phenomenal fall for last year; if thdt is included then it is over 19 inches short of the average for the period in question.
