A TIME OF CONFERENCES.
Almost every age has pome special characteristic, determined largely by the fact that favouring circumstances turned the current of its activities in a particular direction, aesthetic, utilitarian or other. Whatever may or muy not be the great characteristic of the present epoch, one marked feature of it certainly is that it is a time of conferences. Improved communications have brought the whole world ipto closer touch, and by rendering united action and a good general understanding attainable have stimulated the desire for collective actio.i in matters of couimon concern. An.J, as every year increases facilities for travel and for intercommunion of mind with mind, the conference circle steadily widens, until the far ends of the earth are brought within its embrace. London, Paris, and Berlin have all been the scene of notable meetings comparatively rtcently.
