WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPOR'i
At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa County Council, held at Carterton on Saturday, the Engineer (Mi F. T. M. Kissel," 8., S.C.E.) referred, inter alia as follows: — Belvedere Riding.-—The bii'lge repairs at Harris's Creek, on the Mangatarere Valley Road, have been completed, and water tables on this road have been cleaned. General repairs have been made on QuaintrelPs Road, Brooklyn Road, Main Road North, Upper Belvedere Road, Booth's Road, and Hinau Gully Road. The ford through the Hinaki creek on Hinau Gully Road has been patched, and the broken footbridge on Victoria Road repaired. Parkvale Riding—The clay cutting at Kokotau has been cleared and water-tables cleaned along the Kokotau Road. An old broken culvert, on Bristol Road has been replaced, and general repairs made on Hughes' Road, East Taratahi Road, and Bristol Road. The scrub has been cleared from the Gladstone Road in readiness for the formation work to be done , there, and is being used in repairing groins at the Gladstone bridge. Dalefield Riding—General repairs have been made on Waterson's Road, Dalefield Road, and Victoria Road. i'iiLehhig has been done on Judd's Road. Logs have been cleared away from the piles of the Matarawa bridge, and the broken tile sheeting of this bridge repaired. The northern ipan of the Waiohine bridge has been aciewed up. Pipes have been laid n the old drain on the Main Rcaa South from Mr Knutson's boundary to the drain near Waikakeke Road, and the drain is now being filled in. The contract for formation and metalling on the Main Road South was let to A.'W. Jones, and is now well forward; the formation as far as Waikakeke Road being almost complete. I have pointed out the correct fence requirement of the western side to Mr Bunny, and he is now having his fence put back to its proper position. The contractors are still working on the Waiohine Bluff Road, but are making slow progress. ' Mnungarski Riding—General repairs have been made on the Flat Point, Westmere and Kaiwhata Road. The permanent man on the Kaiwhata Road has alsu done some work draining and cleaning on the Karaka Bay Road. I visited 'he portion of this road near the beach with a view of protecting the road along the river there, and as doing any small amount of work there, appears to be a waste of money, as unprotected lengths may dip away and leave the other useless. I would like the Council to consider the advisability of deviating the road t rere, back on to the Flat Point property. A soon as the clay roads begin to dry I will have the washouts on the Flat Point Road repaired and the culverts, which are causing the trouble, fitted with shoots to caivy the water clear of the banks. The formation on the north end of Tupurupuru Road has been completed, except for the larg6 ?ver the creek near Mr Donaid Buchanan's homestead, for which ' lam awaiting the timber. With Cr Strang and the Native owner, I have been over the proposed deviations on the western side of the Admiral Road. We were unable to get his permission to take the road over any of the country to the north of the present road, but he offered to give the Council any land necessary to get a better road on t!ie southern side of tha present road from the double gates down 10 Cooper's, on condition that the Council gave him the old road and fenced both sides , of the new one. In connection I with the fencing, Mr Cooper ottered , to provide and lay the necessary I posts and to allow the Council any i wire that was in the existing road J fence, provided the Council found the rest of "the wire and the labour for ' erecting. As this arrangement would j not allow of our altering the present i grade of 1 in 9 on the limestone cut J tin,/, the gradis which I had obtained \ for the lower poriimi would be need- ; lessly easy, and it would be advis- ! able to try for another somewhat j steeper grade of 1 in 10 or 1 in 11. from the double gates down. The , grade of 1 in 18, which I had obtained before, also crossed on to the northern side of the existing road. If the Council decide to go on with this work I do not doubt but that a grade better than the existing road could be got. There was considerable delay in getting delivery of the piles for the I bridge over the Mangatarere on the Dalefield Road, but the timber is row all on the ground, and the bridge shculrt be open for traffic again early next woek.
