THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY

INTERESTING REMARKS. By Telegraph—Press. Association. AUCKLAND, August 27. In the course of his annual address to shareholJers at the New Zealand Dairy Association meeting, to-day, Mr Wesley Spragg, who has just returned from a visit to England and America, made some Interesting remarks regarding the prospects o* the dairying industry in New Zealand as relating to the position on the English markets. He said the last season's London business had been a marvellous one. Prices ran to 160s, a figure which was generally said to have been without warrant, and which was considered to ■ have been a disadvantage rather than otherwise to the owners uf butter. It was believed that had the rise stopped at something not exceeding 130s the market would have held along at those prices steadily for many weeks, and would not have Buffered the collapse to 106s and 110s as was the case. There was no lasting injury which had fccea done by this inflated market. It had fostered a demand for artificial butters at prices within the reach of tfid masses. A fitting prayer for the dairyman and for the many (Other producers would be "give us neither high prices nor low prices, but give us good" paying prices all the time." The foreca'st for the coming season hfl said wa'sf that it would be a good paying one. As he was leaving England? foe the translation of a Siberian 1 fetter just received, which said 1 that owing to the severity of the winter 1 the mortality in the dairy herds' h'atf reduced them by one-half, and that he understood, referred to practically the whole country, and not merely to a district. Reports of increased home consumption also came frotii Canada, Siberia and Denmark as*' well.
