The number of natives who can remember the arrival of the first settlors on Petone Beach has been further lessened by the death, on Saturday ■-evening, of Apskaera Taotao, the widow of the late Mawene . I-lohua. The deceased, who had a vivid recollection of the events of 1840, had lived at the Hutt and Petone before that p3riud and almost uninterruptedfy ifp to the time of her decease. Mrs Hohua enjoyed the esteem of many residents of the Hutt. It is a considerable number of relatives from Taranaki and Wairarapa will attend the funeral. The death is announced of Mr John Marshall, of Meanee, a very old and hignly respected Hawke's Bay settler. A native of County Antrim, Ireland, the deceased arrived in Melbourne in 1855, and two years later aottled in Napier, entering into occupation of the Settlers' Arms Hotel in Shakespeare road. Subsequently he entered into farming pursuits at , Meanee, where he continued to reside until his death. He was 83 years old and had been twice married, on the second occasion about 34 years ago. He leaves a widow and a grownup family of four daughters and two so.is. Mr Marshall was a valued member of the Hawke's Bay Presbytery, and took an active part in all matters connected with the Presbyterinn Church. The death occurred at Wanganui, on Sunday, of Mr Frederick Whitlock, as the outcome of the serious injuries which he sustained in the trap accident which befel him just three weeks ago. The deceased, who was the head and founder of the well-known firm of Messrs F. Whit- . lock and Sons, pickle and cordial manufacturers, was an old and rpspected resident ot Wanganui. He was a man of bright and cheerful disposition, and, for his years, remarkably active. He had attained the ripe age of 75 years. He always had a happy smile and a cheerful greeting fcr his friends and acquaintances, all m whom will learn with deep regret of his death. The deceased, who was : well-known in Masterton, leaves a grown-up family of three aons and three daughters.
