MASTERTON'S FOREIGN MAIL SERVICE.
At the meeting of ths Masterton Chamber of Commerce, yesterday, Mr* H. Donald brought up the question of Masterton's foreign mail service, stating that there was room for considerable improvement. Mr Donald had framed a motion, worded a3 follows:—"That the secretary be instructed to write to the PostmasterGeneral and ask whether more attention cannot be given to Masterton's foreign mail service, and that the following matters be pointed out: — On the 12th August the Maitai arrived in Wellington at 11.25 p.m.with the Australian mails. These m iils did not reach Masterton till 8.30 p.m. on the 13 th, they having missed two trains and taken twenty-one hours to reach Masterton from Wellington; that American mails coming via Pacific and New Plymouth are sent to Masterton via Wellington, thus arriving here twelve hours later than if the Wairerapa portion were sorted out and sent on _bv late train from Palmers ton North; that in the case of the M.iitai, local correspondents had to wait until after 9.30 p.m. before receiving their mails, which had to be then attended to and replies posted the same night in order to catch the outgoing mail closing at 6.30 o'clock next morning." The Chairman (Mr T. G. Mason) moved that the letter b-2 sent t ) the Postmaster-General as suggested, and the motion was carried unanimously.
