TARANAKI DEFEATS WELLINGTON. BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 20. The. Taranaki-Wellington match was played to-day under somewhat adverse weather conditions. The ground was a trifle heavy, and occasional showers fell during the first spell. The game ended in a victory for Taranaki by 15 points to nil. Throughout the game Taranaki had the upper hand, duo in a great extent toaccuiat-j fielding, line and centre kicking of the local backs, who, despite tiie wet ball, never failed to field the ball or misplaced a kick. In this respect Wellington backs were inferior, hut they much missed the services of Roberts, who is incapacitated. The local forwards played a superior game in the loose, dribbling and following up in fine style, although in the close and line-out play Wellington had the advantage. The local line, however, was never after first five minutes seriously endangered, and the full-back was never calkd on to take a man. In the first spell Mynott scored and Cameron converted. The spell ended —Taranaki, 5; Wellington, nil. In the second half Wellington were almost continually on the defence. Tiies were scored by o""Sullivan and Cameron, and Dive potted a goal. THE AUSTRALIAN CARNIVAL. Received August 20, 9.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 20. At the football carnival Tasmania defeated Queensland by 22 goals and 22 behinds to 2 goals and 2 behinds. The British footballers visited Newcastle, and defeated the Northern Rugby Union team by 32 points to nil. The locals were completely outclassed.

To the travelling teams it is intended to aillow 7h (jd personal expenses per day, including board, et<-., Fh for loss of wages in the Dominion, and 10s a day outside. .£2 a week will be allowed up to sixteen weeks, also payment for loss of wages, through injuries. Six months' residential qualification is required.
