ARBITRATION COURT.

A TEST GASE. BY TKfjEOBAI'H—PKKSS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, August 17. The Arbitration Cburt to-day took the test case Inspector of Factories v. A. and T. Burt, Ltd. The citation, which stated that the respondent firm had failed to pay competent coppersimths the rate of wages, 14Jd per hour, prescribed in the engineers' award, involved the interpretation of clauses in the awardj respecting coppersmiths. The court held (Mr McCullough dissenting) that the interpretation to be put in the award is that the worker is only entitled to be paid wages fixed by the award for engineers when he is actually engaged in some of the work specified in the award; that is to say, a worker is entitled to be paid Is per hour when actually engaged on all marine work, stationary engine work, brewery work, and copper jacketed pan work. The court held there was no such breach of the award, and dismissed the application.
