NEGRO QUARTERS WRECKED AND BURNED. TROOPS CALLED OUT. SEVERAL PERSONS KILLED. Received August 17, 8.52 a.m. NEW YORK, August. IP. "Sanguinary rioting is taking place at Springfield, Illinois. Bodies of armed whites are wrecking and burning; the nei?roe<-* quarter, in revenge for an assault on a white woman. The Governor is sending militia, with Gatling guns. Several negroes and whites have been killed. Hearing of the assault m a sleeping women, the whites invaded the negro quarter, and clubbed the negroes with sticks and revolver butts. A drink-enraged mob dominated Springfield throughout the night. Firing by the troops at the legs of the crowd restored partial order. Whites from the neighbouring towns are swarming in to assist in the racial war. A CAVALRY CHARGERIOTS QUELLED,. Received August 17, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, August 17. ' Reuter's Springfield correspondent states that the cavalry charged the mobs, and the riots have been quelled, but the situation nf the negroes is piteous. Few venture into the streets. ATTACK ON A GAOL. TWO RIOTERS KILLED. NEGRO QUARTERS WRECKED. TWO INNOCENT NEGROES LYNCHED. Received August 17, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, August 17. The Washington correspondent of "The Times," describes the gratuitous brutality of the mob at Soringfield as surpassing any racial excesses of recent years. The mob attempted to lynch two negroes in gaol, one who had been arcused of the crime cabled. The officials at the gaol smuggled the accused into a motor, and got them away. The mob, finding themselves foiled, wreaked their vengeance on the owner of the motoi car, and wrecked his restaurant. A company of soldiers then attacked the rioters, and killed two, besides wounding twenty. The mob thereupon rushed tn the negro quarter. The negroes had all taken refuge in the arsenal or suburbs. The mob destroyed their property, and two innocent negroes who were caught were lynched. An attempt was made by the mob to reach the arsenal, but this was frustrated.

A brick thrown during the rioting seriously injured Mr Claffin, the Prohibition Party's candidate for the Presidency, in the head while he was shielding a negro.
