One of them, .' ■wlniwas in evening dress, got out, ' walked boldly to the front door, j and rang the bell. At that moment Taylor crept up the area steps, but when he saw the policeman approaching the door he ran back again. "Do you live h?re?" the policeman asked the man in evening dress. / "Why," said the man. "Well," said the policeman, "should there be a man downstairs. dressed, at this time of the morning?" "Yes," returned the man in evening dress. "Why not?" And so saying, he walked leisurely and coolly back to the cab, gave the driver instructions, got in, and drove away again. The policeman rushed to the corner of Portsdown Road, and was just in time to see Taylor and another man climbing over a garden wall. The other man escaped but Taylor was caught, and a chisel, which he had thrown away, wa3 lound in the garden. The first Mrs Aldine heard of the adventure was when policemen knocked at her bedroom door. After the story had bean told, the magistrate remarked: "It is obvious hat the four men were acting in collusion, and that the two in the cab drove up to take away whatever was to be had." Taylor refused to give any account of himself, and was remanded.
