CANTERBURY GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISi'CHURCH, August 11. The Grand National Steeplechase Meeting opened at Riccarton to-day in tine weather, and with a large j attendance. The course was in capital order, and the racing generally was very interesting, the contest for the steeplechase being one of the best ever witnessed. There were some spills during the day, but none of them serious. Th« totalisator investments amounted to £18,666, against £21,555 last year, but against this decrease are fees from bookmakers, of whom twenty were licensed inside and forty-three outside. Results:— Hunters' Hurdle Handicap, once round and a distance Andaux, list 111b, 1; Leonardo, list 41b, 2; BHck Friar, list 41b, 3. Also started—Caaabianca 12st 21b, Destroyer Dreamv Daniel list 71b, Circus Girl list 51b, Wahine list 51b, Lanella list, Ben Fortune list, and Thunderstorm list. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 3min'3sec. Trial Hurdles Handicap, 12 mile— Scotty, list 31b, 1; Toprose, lOst 101b, 2; Stormont, lOst 111b, 3. Also started—Ghoorka, lOst 131b, Snip, lOst 91b, Whatakura lOst 81b, and Grosvenor 9st. Won by two lengths. Time, 3min 20 2-ssec. Winter Cup, 1 mile—Penates, Ost lllb, 1; Motoa, lOst 81b, 2; Swimming Belt, 9st 41b, 3. Also started-Lupulite lOst 121b, All Red lOst 81b, Cross Battery, lOst

Eurus and Le Beau were on terms approaching the last jump, and in the run home Eurus drew away and won by two and a-half lengths; Gold Seal three lengths away, and Albury fourth. Time, 7min 24 4-ssec. Nadador, Storm, P ierre, Starlight and Kiatere fell. Tally-ho Plate Steeplechase. 2J miles—Zenda, 12st 101b, 1; Beerpuller, 12st 101b, 2; Brown Hill, 12st 101b, 3. Also started—High Peak, 12st 101b, and Selatim 12st 101b. Zenda and Beerpuller were the onlj ones to get round without mishap, and' the former won pulling up bj fifty yards. Brown Hill, who fell at the second last fence, was remounted and finishedjjthird. Time, smin 36 4-E sec.

Rose Morn, Eldorado, Mooshen and Canton fell. Won easily. Time, 4min 5 l-ssec. Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs—Helianthes, 9st 121b, 1; Farley Grove, 9st 21b, 2; Truthful, 9st, 3.
