PERSONAL.
Mr Arthur King, who once wielded the baton with the Pollard Opera Company, died recently at Kalgoorlie, from an attack .of paralysis. Mr H. S. Moad, secretary of the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society, has been granted eight months' leave of absence to allow of his paying a visit to the Old Country. Inspector Burkill, who was rabbit inspector a few years ago in this district, i 3 st present on a visit to Masterton, and will accompany Inspector Ussher on a visit through the East Coast districts.
Mr William Keech, aged 73, a very old West Coaster, died at Kumara, on Saturday mornine, after a short illness. The deceased was a very enterprising member of the ' community, being largely concerned in mining undertakings and shipping His demise removes a very notable figure from the Kumara district.
There will be a special service in St. Mark's Church, Carterton, on Friday afternoon next, at 4 o'clock, when the Rev. H. T. Stealey, 8.A., will be instituted as Principal of the Clareville Maori College. The service will be conducted by the Venerable Archdeacon Fancourt.of Wellington, the Bishop's Commissioner for the Wellington Diocese. Another of the Dominion's pioneers, in the person of Mrs SmithFraser, passed peacefully away in Palmer3ton North' last week at the age of 80 years. The deceased lady had been ailing for some months past, so that her demise was not altogether unexpected. Mrs F. Jenks (Foxton), Mrs Ryan (Napier), Mrs Walden and Mrs Carter (Palmeraton North) are daughters of deceased, and there is one son, Mr W. Smith (Dunedin).
Mr Gilruth's new appointment in Victoria is to be for five years, and in view of his scientific attainments it was recommended that he should be offered the position without calling for applications. Mr Gilruth is the son of a Forfarshire farmer, and took his degree in tho Old Country. He has also studied in the Pasteur Institute on three occasions. His mother was a remarkable woman, with literary talents much above the ordinary.
