A "STONE" PERIOD.

The Borough Council table was arrayed with a formidable collection of samples of road metal when the civic representatives assembled last evemng, each Councillor having a little heap of three or four pieces set down beside his writing-pad. The explanation of the unusual sight came in a report of the ActingBorough Engineer, which stated that this metal was a fair sample of the large heap lying at the Fcrnridge, which he had been instructed, ; gainst his advice, to repair certain roads with. The sample metal was about three times too large +'or the purpose, bordering almost on boulders, and the Engineer further complained that slowness in the delivery of the metal (whicli is being brought down by contract) had resulted in the dismissal of live of the Borough staff, while loss to the Borough accrued in other respects. Cr Hunter complained that the Engineer, while not wanting to use the Fcrnridge metal, did not even show what should be done with it. Cr Ewington denied that the sample literally "laid on the tabic" was a fair one, the Engineer warmly replying that he resented Cr Ewington's imputation respecting his "probity." A "stony" discussion ensued, and finally the report was stonily "received."
