The election for the Haggerston division of Shoreditch, caused by the death of Sir William Randal Cremer|(Radical), resulted in the return of the Hon. Rupert Guinness, the figures being : Hon. R. C. E. Guinness (Con-

servative) ••• 2,867 Mr Warren (Radical) ... '1.V24 Mr Burrows (Socialist), ... 987 Mr Guinness is a convinced Tariff Reformer.

Two thousand Social Democrats assisted in the canvassing for Mr Burrows.

The following record of by-electiona since the beginning of the present year shows how steadily the tide has been flowing in favour of the Unionist party (the increases and decreases shown are the majorities at by-elec-tions, as compared with those at the general election): — January 17—Mid-Devon. Liberal seat gained by Unionist. February 2—Ross Liberal seat gained by Unionist. February 6-St. Austell (Cornwall). Liberal returned unopposed. February 9—Worcester. Unionist returned with increase of 480. February 14—South Leeds. Liberal returned with majority decreased by 926. March I—Bewdley Division of Worcestershire. Unionist elected un • opposed. ' March s—Hastings. Unionist retun el with increase of 177. March 22—West Downs. Unionist returned with increase of 349. March 25 Peckham. Liberal majority of 2,339 converted into Unionist and tariff reform majority of 494. April 24—Dewsbury. Increase in Unionist votps, 1,119; decrease in Liberal April 25—North-west Manchester. Increase in Unionist votes, 1,019; decrease in Lioeral voles, 651; Liberal Minister loses seat. April 27—Kincardineshire. Liberal returned; increase in Unionist votes, 337. May 5 Wolverhampton East. Liberal returned: decrease in Liberal votes, 1,096; increase in Unionist votes, 1,716. M,ay 9—Dundee. Liberal (Mr Churchill) returned; decrease in Liberal votes, 2,197; increase in Unionist votes, 1,547. May 12—Montrose. Liberal returned; decrease in Liberal votes, 1 333. 'May 15—Shropshire (Newport). Unionist returned; increase in Unionist votes, 460. May 23—Stirling. Liberal majority, 1,361. This was the late Sir H. Campbell Bannerman's sest, and there was no contest at the general election. June 21—Yorkshire (Pudsey). Unionist returned with increase of 1 903 votes.
