PROTECTION V. FREETRADE.
Received August 3, 11.40 p.m. LONDON, August 3. The "Spectator" estimates that the new taxation required in 1909 will be at least 16 millions. It would be possible to raise this amount without jeopardising free trade. The '' Spec • tator" fears that the voters will not stick to free trade when the tariff reformers assure them that fiscal embarrassments will altogether vanish if the country will permit the tariff experiment to be tried.
