The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Alverstone, in summing up, commented on the conflicting nature of the evidence, and left the jury to decide whether Sievier had attempted to extort money within the meaning of the Act If Joel had been seeking to obtain, through Mills, a promise +"rom Sievier to abstain from publishing jinela. that was not extorting money. The jury acquitted Sievier. There was a great demonstration in favour of Sievier in the court and in the surrounding streets.
