OBITUARY.

MR G. S. W. DALRYMPLE,

Death claimed another well-known old Masterton resident, yesterday, in the person of Mr G. S. W. nalrymple, who passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon. The deceased 'gentleman, who was just eighty years of age, had been in failing health for a considerable time past, the infirmity of old age creeping upon him clay by day, the end coming at last as a J wekoma release. The late Mr Dalrymple, who came of an eld Scottish family, was born in L'Orient, France, being educated in his native country, and also in Belgium. His parents afterwards removed to Scotland. At the age of 17 he was licensed as a ship's broker in Glasgow, being regarded as one of th 3 youngest officials to ever act in that capacity. At 22 he was surveyor of stamps and tjxea for the counties cf Sutherland and Caithness, and later for Perth. It was in 1862 that the late Mr Dalrymple decided upon colonial experience, and retiring from the service on a competence he inherited, he left for New Zealand in the ship City of Dunedin, landing in New Zealand (at lnvcrcargill) in 1863. Thirteen years were spent in tne " South Island, dur n g which- time the acquiring of mercantile experience and the undergoing of colonial vicissitudes the lot of pioneers of those da a qualified Mr Dalrymple for a position among the worthiest of out later cdonist3. After taking up hi: residnce in Masterton the deeeaser .gentleman displayed characteristic energy Ho co rducted for many yean a land and estate and general commission agency, eventually retiring altogether from active business lift ooly comparatively recently. As a volunteci hi served as colour-sergeant to hi: co-npany in the fanvma Purihaka ex p-dition. and in IS7G he wis cuptai' of the Masterto-i Fire Brigade, hi having been Captain of the first Bri gads formed in Invercargill. He wa a strong supporter of friendly soeie ties, being a Past Grand Master o the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and a Past Arch Druid. In Masoni circles he held the honourable pos toin of a Grand Steward, and h nude some valuable donations to th regalia worn by the Grand Master c the New Zealand Constitution. H was of a highly philanthropic dii position, and performed numerot public and private acts, whic , marked his generous nature. Mr Dalrymple leaves a grown-u family, the members of which ai as follow:-Mr J. G. Dalrympl accountant, of Wellington; M: Hankins, wife of Mr J. H. Hai kins, solicitor, of Palmerscon Nortl Mrs Nicholld, wife of Mr A. I Nicholls, of Sydney. He leavt twelve grandchildren and seven gre; grandchildren.
