SOUTHLAND DEFEATED

A FAST GAME

(By Telegraph—Special Reporter). INVERCARGILL, July 29. The Wairarapa and Southland teams met to-day in pierfect weather, Wairarapa winning by 12 points to 6. The following were the teams:— WAIRARAPA. Full-back. Groube (Carterton). Three-quarters. Darvill (Masterton), O'Leary (Masterton), McKenzie (Carterton). Five-eighths. Duggan (Red Star), Jury (Greytown). Half-back. Adams (Red Star). Wing-forward. R. McKer.zie (Red Star). Forwards. Levick (Carterton), Mason (Carterton>, Lyall (Masterton), Brenchley (Masterton), Johnstone (Carterton), Ross (Masterton), Henderson (Carterton). SOUTHLAND. Full-back. Irwin. Three-quarters. Pyle, Broad, McNeece. Five-eighths, J. McNeece, Stead. Half-back. Foster. Forwards. Cockerill, Ridland, Glasgow, Knight, Jenkins, Small, Gutzwitz, Miles. Mr McFarlane, of Dunedin, was referee. Wairarapa won the toss and played with the sun behind them. The first spell was very fast, the ball travelling up and down the field. After about fifteen minutes' play Southland registered their first try, Pyle crossing the line near the corner from a good passing rush among the backs. The try was not converted. Shortly afterwards, from a good forward rush, R. MclCenzie was awarded a good try through one of the Southland men wilfully obstructing him. O'Leary converted. The first spell ended:— Wairarapa 5 Southland 3 In the first spell the Southland team had if anything the best of it. , In the second spell the Wairarapa team livened up, the backs and forwards playing much better, and with a great deal of dash. Southland scored first, Pyle obtaining another try after a good run. The try was not converted. Then Wairarapa attacked strongly. N. McKenzie, getting th 3 ball, potted a beautiful goal from near half-way. After kicking off Wairarapa again attacked the Southland line, and Adams made a splendid mark in front of the goal. O'Leary took the kick and piloted the ball over the bar. After this play was up and down the field till the whistle blew. The game ended — Wairarapa 12 Southland 6 For Wairarapa Brpnchley, Henderson and Johnstone played goud forward games. All the backs played well. O'Leary put in some good Hne kicks. R. McKenzie flayed a splendid game as wing forward. In all the ,matches this player has done excellent work. The Dunedin "Star" was loud in praise of his play against Otago. For Southland Stead, Pyle and McNeece played good games. Thd forwards all played well, Glasgow (AllBlack) being very prominent.

RESULTS OF MATCHES.

1902, at Greytown, Wairarapa won. 1903, at Invercargill, Southland won by 14 to 3. 1908, at Invercargill, Wairarapa won 12 to 3.

BUSH v. PUKETOI.

(By Telegraph—Special to Age). PAHIATUA, July 29. There was a fair attendance at the locul Recreation Ground, this afternoon, to witness the match between teams representing the. Bush and Puketoi Unions. The weather was cold, but otherwise with the exception of a shower in tho first spell was fine. The ground, however, was vtry slippery. Vsrysoon after the kic*-olf from a fine passing rush Morridon got over the line, scoring first bliiod for the Bunh. The try was not converted. Some open play resulted, Puketoi making things dapgerous, but they were prevented from scora force down. A lot of loose play followed in favour of the Bush. Then O'Connor succeeded in scoring.

The kick at goal failed. Puketoi then livened up, arid nearly scored twice, the Bush being forced. Give and take play followed, from which R. Cavanagh scored nearly between the posts. Smith, taking the kick, placed a neat goal. Shortly afterwards Roaoley scored for Puketoi. The first spell ended —Bush, 11 points.; Puketoi, 3. The best part of the second spell was in favour of Puketoi. Within a few minutes Puketoi scored, Marshall I getting a try which was not converted Puketoi continued to attack, forcing their opponents several times. Tswards the close of the game Bush by a determined rush, transferred play to Pulcetoi's twentyfive, Gordon Smith eventually gaining a try, which was not converted. Up to the call of time Bubh unsuccessfully kept up a vigorous attack, but without adding further points to their score* The whistle sounded, leaving Bush winners by 14 points to 6. The visitors were afterwards entertained at dinn°r.

It is probable that a match will be played at Carterton on Saturday between a combined Red Star and Masterton third team and the Dalefield thirds. The following will represent the combined team Full-back, Osmond; three-quarters,' Hoar, Simonsen, Johns; five-eighths, Boyd, Hanley; half-back, Mason; forwards, de Lisle, Rayner, Welch, Billington (Red! Star) Harris, Mnnn, Coyle; emergencies Wellington, Igguld"n, Edwards, O'Powd. At a meeting of the Red Star Juniors, last evening, it was decided to play the Tukapa Juniors (Taranaki), at Masterton, on August 13th.
