The O'd Age Pensions Bill passed the committee stages in the House of Lords Lord R jjebery said that he would have preferred a referendum on the matter hjd the machinery existed. He appeujjd to the House not t.o assume any responsibility in connection with the measure and pass it unamended. ! Lord Cromer moved an amendmsnt limiting the operation of the measure to six years, but continuing the pensions granted in the interval. This was carried by 77 to 45. The intention of the amendment is to induce Parliament to reconsider and, if neessary, reconstruct the whole scheme. A sharp debate folbvvad, representatives of the Governmint declaring that the privileges of the House of Commons had. been infringed.
