CONNELLY PERJURY CASE.

BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. WESTPORT, July 23. At the hearing of the charges of perjury against Connelly, to-day, H. Haakonsen, under cross-examination, stated that Andersen and himself did not return to Lenie's Hotel the fish-shop row as alleged by the two prisoners, and in some other details contradicted, but in the main corroborated, their evidence. The evidence of Mr McDonald, solicitor for the prosecution in this case, detailed interviews he &aid he had with the prisoners in gaol in company with Haakonsen and the Norwegian Vice-Consul, Andersen acting as interpieter for Haakonsen. Nellie Whelan, barmaid, said that Andersen and Haakonsen came to the Empire Hotel at 8.5 p.m, returned to the theatre, and accompanied by Halinen came back to the hotel about 9.15 p.m. She had previously told the police that she did not know the time, not wishing to be mixed up in the case. She saw no blood on two prisoners. Peter Kobb gave evidence about the fish-shop row, and also a fight with the stewards later, when a steward, who he stated was drunk, was knocked down by Halinen. Mrs Shaw said she saw the three men in the theatre when it was alleged that Bourke was murdered. Two witnesses who saw Connelly after Bourke's body was taken away stated that Bourke was killed with a knife not by a blow from a horse. Wm. Thompson stated that connelly when on board the steamer returning to Westport for the Nelson trial asked him not to mention that he had seen him at Pap;jroa. Witness added that Connelly swore falsely in stating he did not know Bourke before, as Bourke was at BlackDall a year ago. The case for the prosecution i? still unfinished.
